Shopping local is more than just a trend—it’s a powerful way to strengthen our community, support small businesses, and foster sustainable economic growth. When you, “the consumer,” choose to shop at local businesses, you are investing in your neighbors, your city, and the environment. Here's why shopping local matters this holiday season and year round:

1. Boosts the Local Economy

When you spend money at local shops, a larger portion of that money stays in the community. Local businesses are more likely to source from other nearby businesses or artisans, creating a "multiplier eect" where the economic benefits ripple through the local economy.

According to some studies, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $68 stays within the community compared to only $43 when spent at a national chain. Just imagine the profound impact of every Royal Oak resident choosing to shop local this holiday shopping season at one of our 40+ locally owned boutiques.

2. Creates Jobs and Encourages Entrepreneurship

Local businesses are significant job creators. By shopping at neighborhood stores, consumers help local entrepreneurs thrive, and, in turn, these businesses oer jobs to local residents. Supporting small businesses also fosters innovation and diversity, as local entrepreneurs are often more willing to experiment with unique products and services that better cater to your needs.

3. Reduces Environmental Impact

Local shops often have smaller carbon footprints than large corporations. They tend to source locally produced goods, reducing the need for extensive transportation and minimizing packaging waste.

Additionally, in a walkable community like ours, you can park in a parking garage and walk to dozens of stores without having to re-warm or move your car between storefronts. Think also of the length of time your car is running every time you have to clean snow off; not the case when you choose to use a parking garage and conveniently walk to nearby shops.

4. Builds a Stronger Sense of Community

Local businesses are not just commercial entities—they’re gathering spaces where neighbors meet, relationships are built, and community spirit thrives. Shopping local reinforces these bonds, fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration among you and your neighbors. Further, many of these businesses invest in direct ways back to your children’s sports teams, yearbook, fundraisers, and so much more that will leave a forever impact on their future.

5. Unique Products and Personal Service

One of the best parts of shopping local is access to unique, handcrafted goods that reflect the culture and character of the area. Local business owners often provide a more personalized shopping experience, oering knowledgeable advice, excellent customer service specific to individual needs, and many times tailoring their inventory to your tastes.

6. Supports Public Services

Small businesses contribute significantly to the tax base that funds essential services like schools, parks, and infrastructure. By supporting local businesses, consumers indirectly contribute to maintaining and improving these vital services.

In a world increasingly dominated by large corporations and online shopping, choosing to shop local is a powerful act. It helps build a resilient, sustainable, and thriving community while helping preserve the unique character of downtown Royal Oak.

When you shop local, you're not just buying a product; you're making an investment in our community's future.
