The Joy of Book Clubs

Belonging to a book club is a fantastic way to share the joy of reading with other readers. Members select a book, everyone reads it and then you talk about it together.

Sounds simple, right?

But it is so much more than that! A book club is a collective experience where you can explore diverse books, be challenged in a friendly environment by other book club members and honestly – it is a place to explore literature that you may not come across in everyday life.

The Royal Oak Public Library offers several book clubs for you to join. They are open to anyone, so if you’ve thought about joining a book club, here is an easy and safe place to do it!

For Adults:

Community Book Club, 6:30 p.m., second Thursday of the month – a book club run by book lovers for book lovers!

Thursday Night Book Club, 7 p.m., third Thursday of the month – one of the longest-running book clubs here at the library.

Short Story Book Club, 10 a.m., last Tuesday of the month – features shorter works of fiction and non-fiction.

For Youth – days and times vary:

Book Buddies, Grades K – 3

Makerspace Book Club, Grades K – 3

Graphic Novel Book Club, Grades 4 – 6

We recommend searching our event calendar at royaloak. librarycalendar.com. On the left side of the screen, under Program Type, select Book Club and then click apply at the bottom. Then you can look at Library each event for more information, learn how to acquire the next book for discussion and find the club that fits your schedule. We hope you join us for your next great read!

Do you already belong to a book club? Fear not – we have book club kits available! With 80+ kits available in Royal Oak and more throughout the TLN libraries, you are sure to find a book club kit that meets your interests. Each kit holds 8-10 books, along with a discussion guide. Visit our catalog at catalog. tln.lib.mi.us via the Royal Oak Public Library app and search for “book club kit.”

We also offer visits with authors so you can hear from them directly. Upcoming author visits include:
Visit with Children’s Book Author Katharine Mitropoulos

Family program – registration required – visit royaloak.librarycalendar.com to sign up.
