Cleaning business survives COVID, ends up growing and serving community

When times got tough, Makayla and Robert Green didn’t give up on their business, they researched and reinvented their operations, pivoting at every turn.

Green’s Family Cleaning was launched in 2017 when Makayla worked as a loan officer at a credit union. She worked a lot of hours and regrettably missed seeing her daughter roll over for the first time.

“I wanted to work less and make more,” she said. “Between YouTube and social media I did research and I came across house cleaning. I went from full to part-time and as clients grew I could quit my job and do my cleaning full time.”

She was cleaning alone until she got pregnant with her son a few years later and was put on bed rest. So in 2019, she and her husband, Robert, made the decision for him to leave his ten-year tenure as a carpet and upholstery cleaner. They aimed to leverage his experience at Green's Family Cleaning, where he would expand their services to include carpet and air duct cleaning. In March 2020 they took all their savings and bought a carpet cleaning truck. Then COVID hit.

“We used the time to market and research and we learned a lot about our community,” she said. “We were cleaning for people who were sick and we learned how to properly protect ourselves and our clients. We did a lot of COVID cleanings because it was all we could do.”

The break from conventional cleaning gave them time to delve into marketing and planning, and they found ways to help the company grow during COVID and in the years since. They also decided to ramp up their volunteer efforts – from grocery shopping for older people who had difficulty getting out to making live videos about how to clean during COVID. They also distributed food for Senior Alliance and worked with the Taylor North Little League.

The company also partners with Cleaning for a Reason, which provides two free housecleanings for those in the community who have a cancer diagnosis.

“Community is important to my husband and I, so we make a point out of making it a priority for our employees, too,” she said, adding they provide a paid volunteer day for the five people who work for their company.

Green’s Family Cleaning offers cleaning air ducts, carpet, upholstery and tile, as well as post construction clean-ups for residential and commercial businesses.

“A lot of our jobs come from word of mouth and our website, greensfamilycleaning.com,” Green said. “We are very honest. I know sometimes with cleaning companies, especially carpets and upholstery, they promise you the world and don’t come through. We like to give them more than what they expect.”

Every cleaning job is customized at Green’s Family Cleaning.

“If you want us to come in and just clean bathrooms, that’s what we do,” she said. “Some companies require clients to have a service at least every four weeks. We have cleans that are twice a year or twice a week. It’s whatever you need we will customize that for you. I never try to sell anything unwanted or unneeded. We try to be as transparent as possible. We are the top rated, by far, of any cleaning company in Downriver.”
