Brittany Carmela Thompson brings enthusiasm and a drive to help others with her law practice, Thompson Legal, which she opened over a year ago in Wyandotte.

She focuses primarily on probate matters, estate planning, real estate, and small-medium sized family businesses.

Quick responses

“I get to apply what I’ve learned to help people,” she said. “I’m different from others because I provide clients with a much-needed alternative from traditional attorneys who are intimidating and take a long time to get back to their clients. I pride my office on being thorough and communicative, keeping clients informed at every step of the process.”

Her office space, which was purchased by her father -in-law almost two years ago, includes business suites for Thompson and her legal assistant and she plans to add at least one attorney soon.

“Ideally it will be someone to bounce ideas off of and to cover things when I’m out of the office,” she said.

One of her biggest assets is that she and her assistant are “modern” women, and have a far different perspective “from typical older male attorneys who might be set in their ways, unaware of new laws and aloof to their clients.”

Down to earth

“I pride myself on having a good idea of what’s happening in a situation,” she said. “I explain things in ways my clients can understand. Service to my clients is really important to me. I try to make sure I’m responsive to emails and all their questions. I want them to feel confident in our working relationship and enjoy working with me.”

Thompson earned her law degree in 2019 and left a law firm in Taylor to start her own practice. Her advice for people looking for an attorney is broad.

“Make sure the person knows what they’re talking about, is responsive and you can have a good working relationship with,” she said. “A lot of attorneys are outdated or rely on support staff. Ask questions and make sure that it is more than just a job for them.”

She also suggests ferreting out attorneys who might not be around for the long term, and possibly neglect letting their clients know where their records are located if they quit or retire.

“I have gotten five clients in the last month from an estate planner at an office who doesn’t work there anymore and didn’t notify his clients,” she said. “I’m going to be here for a long time, and there is a real lack of legal professionals, especially women legal professions in this area.”

Community commitment

Thompson was raised in a working-class family – her mother ran a trucking company and her father managed a storage facility. She believes in supporting the community, especially its four-legged members. She and her husband have volunteered at Wyandotte animal shelters for five years and they share three rescue dogs.

“It provides us a way to help dogs and not have to be the parents to all of them,” she said.

After she married, the former Brittany Carmela Byrnes kept her middle name because it was also her grandmother’s.

“It honors my female family history,” she said.

As far as her law practice, she said, “I will never be old and stuffy. It’s much easier to just be myself.”
