Public safety continues to be at the forefront of city officials’ minds, which is why, for the first time, Southgate is offering a Citizens’ Public Safety Academy.

The program will include an overview of the criminal justice system, policing in Southgate and information regarding fire safety.

“We have learned that there is a considerable amount of interest in the community about both our police and fire departments,” said Director of Public Safety Joe Marsh. “It is our hope that we can promote an increased understanding of law enforcement and fire operations through actual experiences.”

Participants in the program will meet Southgate police and fire personnel, who will give them a firsthand look at the multifaceted role of the city’s first responders. They will have the opportunity to ask questions of patrol officers, police supervisors and detectives. Additionally, they will meet members of the fire department, who will provide valuable insight into fire safety, training and equipment.

“At the end of the program, we hope you will have gained a new perspective on the Southgate Fire and Police Departments that most citizens will never have without this experience,” Marsh said.

The program will run for eight weeks, from August 8 through September 26, from 6-9 p.m., at the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library, 14680 Dix-Toledo Road.

Along with tours of both departments and special presentations, expect to hear more about:
• Police history
• Fire history
• Patrol Operations/Detective/Narcotic/Traffic Bureau
• SWAT Team/K9 unit
• Computers, communications and police technology
• Use of force policy/procedures
• Emergency preparedness
• Fire safety and awareness
• Accident Investigation Bureau
• Police Cadet Program
• Community policing
• School safety/ALICE/lockdown drills

You must be at least 18 years of age and live or work in the city of Southgate to apply for the Citizen’s Public Safety Academy. Eligible applicants will be subject to a background investigation before consideration for the program. All participants are required to sign a Release of All Claim Waiver Form.

There is no cost to attend the program. Interested participants may obtain an application and waiver from the front desk at the Police Department or from the department’s website.
