SMART Bus Transit
In southeast Michigan, particularly within vibrant communities like West Bloomfield, the conversation around investing in mass transit is gaining momentum. As the general manager of SMART, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of robust transit systems and their capacity to drive economic vitality, enhance community connectivity, and reduce environmental impact.

Investing in transit is not merely a matter of convenience – it’s a strategic move toward sustainable development. For one, transit systems alleviate traffic congestion, a significant issue in growing regions. By providing efficient alternatives to car travel, we can decrease the number of vehicles on the road, speeding up travel time and significantly reducing emissions. In the era of climate change, this shift is crucial for protecting our environment.

Economically, improved transit systems create a range of opportunities. They attract businesses that value accessibility for their employees and customers. Regions with comprehensive transit networks witness increased property values and heightened interest from investors. Moreover, public transit creates jobs, not only directly in the transit sector but also in surrounding businesses that flourish due to increased accessibility.

Socially, investing in transit is an investment in equity. Quality public transportation ensures that everyone, regardless of economic status, has access to essential services and opportunities. It connects residents to jobs, schools, healthcare, and more, bridging gaps that might otherwise hinder the potential of many individuals.

From my perspective, it's essential to consider the preferences and concerns of millennials and younger generations, who are rapidly becoming the majority of our population. These younger residents show a clear preference for diverse transit options over car ownership, driven by their values of sustainability and community connectivity. Addressing their needs is not just about providing services, it's about crafting communities that retain and attract dynamic, young talent eager to engage and innovate.

The need for regional cooperation in transit planning is critical. As southeast Michigan stands on the cusp of prioritizing public transit, it’s essential to view this as a collective journey toward a connected, mobile and sustainable future. Investments in transit today are investments in the health and wealth of our communities tomorrow.

Let’s embrace the opportunity to transform southeast Michigan into a model of modern mobility. By investing in transit, we invest in a legacy of growth, sustainability and inclusivity for generations to come.
