Chrystal Kermans Ditzhazy can’t stop raving about Stevenson Styles Pet Salon in Wyandotte.

“An absolutely great new business,” said Kermans Ditzhazy, one of many happy new customers. “It’s an affordable, quality, safe environment to have your fur babies pampered. Just had our second visit and my little guy couldn't be happier. Our groomer, Rachel, even sent me pictures of him smiling.”

Other customers can’t stop smiling and wagging their tails, including Riley the Maltese, Ellie the corgi, Cooper the golden-doodle mix, Mango the Pomeranian, Ivy the Maltese, Birdie the American cocker spaniel, Dodge the Labrador retriever, Maverick the brittany spaniel and Briggs the border-collie mix, just to name a few.

Barbie Stevenson, the owner and a pet stylist, opened Stevenson Styles Pet Salon this summer.

“This was always my mother’s dream, after all she was Stevenson Styles and was working toward buying a salon when she died tragically in December 2014,” Stevenson said. “She wanted us to one day open salons next door to each other and become a mother/daughter team. You and your dog can get your hair done at the same time, she used to say.”

Stevenson learned how rewarding working with animals can be and developed her passion for animals when she was a teenager working at a riding stable.

“We had horses, of course, but we also raised a few cattle, chickens, goats and even had peacocks roaming around,” Stevenson said. “I started my career with PetSmart in 2007, where I learned to groom, in addition to being a pet trainer. I’m thankful for my 16 years with the company. They helped me turn my passion for animals into a career.”

In 2019, Stevenson became a grooming academy instructor and traveled around Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Colorado helping people make their passion for pets a career.

“The pandemic brought to light that I wanted more,” she said. “So I started taking continued education classes and attending grooming conventions. In February 2023, I married my incredible husband (Rob Hoshield) after six-and-a-half years of dating. He had talked through this idea of opening a salon with me for years. He’s encouraged me and pushed me to do it, but I was always too scared to leave the comfort and security that my corporate job gave me.”

In June 2023, Stevenson took the leap of faith and has been rewarded ever since with smiles, wagging tails and satisfied customers. Her dedicated and skilled employees include Rachel Craft, Olivia Tomecek and Marti Smidi.

“We have certifications in many areas and are constantly doing continued education classes, videos, and reading breed standards,” Stevenson said.

Stevenson Styles Pet Salon offers services for dogs, cats and small animals, including baths, haircuts, de-shedding, hand stripping, creative grooming (temporary and semi-permanent color, airbrush designs, nail polish, feathers, tinsel and gemstones), nail services, cat nail caps and skin therapy.
