Monica Martin was initially concerned about learning a new system when she enrolled in a class at Purpose Healthcare Institute (PHI). However, her experience was quite the opposite.

“The (Certified Nursing Assistant) classes were engaging and well-structured, making it easy for me to grasp the concepts,” said Martin in her recent Google review. “Nurses Thea, Marsha and Tanisha were phenomenal instructors who were very professional and passionate about their field. And thanks to their excellent teaching techniques, I am confident that I will pass my state test with flying colors. Choosing this class was undeniably the best decision I made, and I cannot recommend it enough to others considering a similar path in healthcare."

That’s what you call a “certified” endorsement and Program Coordinator Thea Parker has heard similar comments since she opened PHI in December 2023.

“Students love our programs for the support and resources we provide to assist in pivoting them into a career in healthcare,” Parker said. “Out of the 500 graduates we’ve had in the last three years over half have gone on to become licensed CNAs, or enrolled in healthcare programs such as nursing, physician assistant or administrative.”

PHI is more than a company – it is a vision. With classes such as CNA Training, CPR Courses, Home Health Aide, Phlebotomy, and more, PHI wants to become the first line for those seeking training in the healthcare field, work or home. Along with other highly trained professionals, students receive the training and expertise they are looking for and need. You can confidently save a life, be promoted at work, or safely care for your family member in the comfort of your home.

Parker, who grew up in Ecorse and now lives in Woodhaven, comes from a family of nurses so she inherited the helping others DNA.

“My mom was an LPN for 20 years before becoming a RN in 2004,” she said. “She has played an important role in my journey to becoming a RN myself. I was a nursing assistant for eight years while completing my nursing program. I’ve always had a passion for care for others but aspired to create opportunities for individuals who wanted to enter healthcare but didn’t quite know how.”

That changed when PHI came to be in November 2021.

“A nurse buddy (Shana Clark) and I opened our first business together, a non-medical home care agency called Purpose Healthcare Solutions, which is now staffing and consulting only,” Parker said. “The school was an extension of the business we had together. While she focuses on the consulting business, I manage PHI.”

Parker graduated from WCCCD in 2015 with an ADN and completed her BSN in 2021. Her nursing background includes cardiac stepdown, oncology/hematology, critical care and care of the older adult.

She said she was glad she chose Allen Park as her first location.

“I love that the Allen Park community has been so welcoming and kind,” she said. “From the fire department, the great folks at city hall and the local businesses.”

The Allen Park location also provides CPR certifications and fingerprinting services. PHI currently has six employees and offers classes monthly in-person and online. PHI’s other location is in Riverview.
