When Kasey Kohn graduated from business school and started her career as an accountant, she never thought she’d end up in insurance, let alone be taking over an entire agency in the future.

Kasey is the current operations manager and vice president of C.L. Finlan Insurance where her father, Kirk, is president.

Seven years ago, Kasey switched gears from finance to come work for Finlan as part of a succession plan for her father, who will start transitioning into retirement this year.

“My dad has been in insurance for about 50 years and has been with Finlan for the vast majority of that,” Kasey said. “About eight years ago, he decided he wanted to start looking for a perpetuation plan to sell the agency to retire but quickly realized he didn’t want to sell to someone he didn’t know or to a large company.”

In 2017, Kasey received an unexpected phone call from her dad asking her if she’d be willing to quit her job, get her insurance license and come work for Finlan.

“It wasn’t originally part of the plan but I said sure, and that year I took insurance classes and started the process to get licensed with the state,” Kasey said.

When she started at Finlan she was doing the basics – selling insurance and understanding how to service policies. As she continued her commercial and personal insurance education, Kasey took steps to get her certified insurance counselor designation and eventually took over the role of a partner of the agency who retired during COVID.

“She was doing a lot of our accounting and being that’s where I came from, I took a lot of that over,” Kasey said.

Over the past seven years, Kasey has had the opportunity to build a team of dedicated individuals who have become assets to the agency. She calls Trevor Justice, director of sales, and Kayla Dornseifer, personal lines customer service manager, the “all-star team” who are ready to stand with her as Finlan transitions into the next generation.

Finlan has been in Plymouth since 1916 and is the oldest continuously running business in town, according to the Plymouth Historical Museum.

“Plymouth has been committed to us so it’s really important that we stay committed to Plymouth,” Kasey said, explaining that she and her father have both always been active in the community and encourage their staff to do the same.

In addition to the agency being active members of the Plymouth Rotary Club, Kasey currently serves as the 2024 chairman of the board of the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce.

Even though they are a hometown agency, what sets Finlan apart is that they are multi-state licensed, writing people all over the country. They also sell all lines of insurance including home, auto, commercial, life, and health.

“We can basically insure anything from your pet to your home to your life to your business,” Kasey said.

While she never envisioned herself in this position, Kasey wouldn’t change a thing about how her career ended up.

“You never know if you’re going to love something until you try it, and I think this was the best thing I ever did,” she said.
